The Inventor is a character-driven short story by Peter Bischel. The inventor stays in his basement and never leaves his house. One day he invents the television and emerges from his basement, learning that television has been around for years. He returns to his basement, tosses away his invention and begins work on something new.
Light bulbs are a typical sign of “ideas.” This concept relies on this hackneyed metaphor to convey the overall theme of the story; like the inventor, the bulb is not plugged in. The key factor in this design was to capture the essence of Bischel’s character: hard working, lonely, frustrated, and self-gratified.
